TikTok:licensed music or trending sounds?
TikTok's sound library is full of trending audio, and using a trend can help a video get seen. But trending sounds come with trade-offs, and for many creators, licensed music is the better default.
What trending sounds are good for
Trends are great for participation: joining a meme, a challenge or a format that is recognisable because of its sound. If the sound is the joke, use the sound.
Where trending sounds fall short
- Availability can vary. Music in the platform's library can be restricted depending on account type, region or use, particularly for business and branded content. Check the platform's current rules for your account.
- Other platforms. A video built around a platform's library sound may not carry over when you repost it to YouTube or Instagram.
- Your own identity. A trending sound belongs to everyone. It does not make your channel recognisable.
When licensed music makes sense
-
Content you post on several platforms.
-
Branded or sponsored content.
-
A series with a consistent sound.
-
Videos you want to stay up and sounding the same for a long time.

Mix and match
Many creators use both: trending sounds for trend videos, their own licensed music for everything else. Check the licence for exactly what is covered, including ads.
