When someone says something important, raw or personal, music can feel like it is telling the audience how to feel. Silence, or just room tone, lets the moment stand on its own.

Key information

If a viewer needs to catch a specific detail, like a number, an instruction or a name, clear the space. Music, even ducked, adds a layer of effort to listening.

Natural sound that tells the story

Waves, a busy market, a crowd, an engine starting: sometimes the real sound of a place is better than any score. Let the natural sound play for a few seconds before bringing music in.

Right before a big moment

Cutting the music a beat before a reveal, then bringing it back hard, is one of the most effective tricks in editing. The silence builds anticipation. This works in horror, in trailers and in comedy alike.
