Instagram Reels:music for viewers who watch on mute
Many viewers scroll Instagram with the sound off, in public, at work, in bed next to someone sleeping. Your Reel has to make sense silently. But the viewers who do turn the sound on should be rewarded.
Make it work without sound first
- Put key information in on-screen text.
- Caption any speech.
- Cut the video so the rhythm is visible: movement, cuts and text that pulse on a regular beat.
Then make the sound matter
When the sound comes on, the music should feel like it was always part of the video. The easiest way is to cut to the beat, so the music confirms the rhythm the viewer was already seeing. Cutting video to the beat has the tempo maths.
Match the music to the account
A Reel is a snapshot of your account's style. A cooking account wants warm music; a travel account wants sunny, upbeat music.
- Morning in the Kitchen on the Kitchen & Lifestyle shelf
- Wanderlust Whistle on the Travel & Vlog shelf
Morning in the Kitchen suits recipe and home Reels; Wanderlust Whistle suits travel and day-in-the-life Reels.
Short cuts, clean endings
Reels are short and replay automatically. Trim the track so it ends on its own final hit rather than being chopped, or cut a clean loop so the replay is seamless. Looping a track seamlessly shows how.
Keep your audio consistent
If a particular sound becomes associated with your series, keep using it. Viewers who recognise it will stop scrolling faster.
Before posting, check the licence covers the way you plan to use the music.
