Creator workflow:How to brief music for a video in five words
"Something upbeat" describes half the music ever made. A good brief narrows it down fast, and it does not need to be long. Five words are enough if they are the right five.
The formula
Niche, mood, movement, length, placement.
- Niche. What kind of video? Travel, cooking, true crime, gaming.
- Mood. How should it feel? Tense, warm, sunny, epic.
- Movement. How does it develop? Rising, patient, urgent, steady.
- Length. The full track, a 60 or 30-second edit, or a loop.
- Placement. Intro, bed under voice, montage, ending.
Examples
- "Travel, sunny, steady, full, montage."
- "True crime, tense, patient, loop, under narration."
- "Cinematic, epic, rising, 60 seconds, trailer."
- "Gaming, fast, relentless, 30 seconds, intro."
Turn the brief into a search
The first word is a niche in our library. The mood and movement words match the two mood tags on each track. The length tells you how to edit the track: use it whole, cut it down, or loop it.
- The Turning Point on the Cinematic & Trailer shelf
- Evidence Room Ambience on the Mystery & True Crime shelf
- Wanderlust Whistle on the Travel & Vlog shelf
Try the examples above against these tracks: each matches one brief almost exactly.
Use it with collaborators
If you work with an editor or a client, agree the five words before anyone starts searching. It prevents a lot of back and forth.
Searching music by mood has more on the mood vocabulary.
