An alt mix is the same piece of music with a different arrangement or emphasis: the same key, the same tempo, a different feeling. For editors this is quietly one of the most useful things a library can offer, because it lets you change intensity without the audience hearing a new song start.

Why two mixes beat two tracks

When you cut from one unrelated track to another, the listener hears a change of scene. Sometimes that is what you want. But inside one sequence, say a timeline that tightens as it goes, a change of track breaks the thread. Two mixes of one cue share their tempo and material, so you can crossfade between them on a bar line and the audience only feels the pressure go up.

The Final Ticking is tense and urgent. Its alt mix is described as relentless: the same clock, pushed harder. Start a sequence on the main mix and switch to the alt for the final stretch.

How to switch cleanly

• Line both mixes up on the timeline so their bars match. Because the tempo is identical, if the first downbeats line up, the rest will.
• Crossfade over one bar, not a split second. A short fade across a bar line sounds like an arrangement change, not an edit.
• Switch on a cut in the picture where you can. The eye covers the ear.
